Sponsor Our ArticlesThe St. Petersburg Science Center is set for a major revival with a $2.5 million state funding boost, part of a $25 million project. This transformation will enhance educational opportunities in STEM for students and create a vibrant space for exploration. Plans include a high-tech triangular structure with an AI Village and exciting programs for learners of all ages.
St. Petersburg is buzzing with excitement as a significant transformation is set to take place at the St. Petersburg Science Center. Thanks to a recent state funding boost of $2.5 million, plans are underway to revitalize this cherished educational hub! This funding is part of a larger $25 million project aimed at breathing new life into the center, which has been a staple in the community for years. With now over $9 million collected, the project’s momentum is growing, and the anticipation is palpable.
Leading legislators have recognized the importance of investing in youth education, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The revitalization of the Science Center is not just about renovating buildings; it’s about creating a vibrant space where children, teenagers, and young adults can unleash their potential and explore the wonders of science. This center historically provided classrooms and laboratories to thousands of eager learners annually, and the renewed focus promises to make it even more impactful.
The City of St. Petersburg acquired the Science Center property back in 2019, and since then, plans have been brewing for an impressive reimagination of the facility. Joe Hamilton, a co-founder of the St. Petersburg Group, is at the helm of this exciting initiative. He envisions a forward-thinking space that will put a spotlight on emerging technologies, with a keen emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI).
To ensure top-notch educational experiences, Julie Mastry, the former superintendent of Pinellas County Schools, will take charge of the educational components and staff. This revamped center won’t just be a flash in the pan; it’s set to operate on a year-round schedule! Expect busing programs for students, summer camps, and day camps to make learning accessible to everyone.
Prepare to be amazed! Plans for the new facility include demolishing most of the original building and constructing a spectacular four-story, 50,000-square-foot triangular structure. Among its many features, the high-tech auditorium, dubbed the Hybritorium, will be a focal point for presentations and events. An intriguing “AI Village” will also spring to life, with various stations dedicated to exploring innovative applications of artificial intelligence.
The AI Village will have some exciting partnerships, including collaborations with Pathfinder Outdoor Education and Water Warrior Alliance. Talk about a community effort to inspire the next generation of thinkers and creators!
The revamped Science Center aims to do more than educate; it’s set to act as an economic development tool for the area. The new facility will boast 15,000 square feet of high-tech office space that could attract businesses and foster collaboration among innovators.
The projected opening date for the revitalized Science Center is set for 2026, and it’s bound to be a landmark achievement for the St. Petersburg community. With a public/private partnership overseeing the project, the St. Petersburg Foundation will manage most of the facility’s operations, ensuring that it remains a valuable resource for education, exploration, and fun.
