St. Petersburg Grapples with Tragic Crimes: Two Men Charged with Murder

The normally peaceful city of St. Petersburg is shocked as it comes to terms with two bizarre and tragic incidents that have left residents deeply disturbed. The authorities have charged a local man, James Butler, with first-degree murder following the shocking death of his tenant, Aaron Reed, while another alarming case involves the murder of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette.

The Awful Case of Aaron Reed

On the evening of December 15, 2024, things took a dark turn when James Butler, 53, called 911 from his property in unincorporated St. Petersburg to report that his tenant was dead. It was around 8:30 p.m., and when deputies arrived, they found Aaron Reed, 32, with multiple gunshot wounds. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Butler, who had just returned home from jail, maintained that he had no idea who would want to harm Reed. However, as the investigation proceeded, various pieces of evidence began linking Butler to the murder. This prompted authorities to arrest him on March 6, and he has since been taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

What drives someone to commit such a horrific act? This tragic event raises more questions than answers, and the community can only hope for justice for Reed’s family during this difficult time.

Miranda Corsette’s Heartbreaking Story

As if that wasn’t enough, another heartbreaking story has surfaced concerning 16-year-old Miranda Corsette. Her devastating tale began on February 24, when she was reported missing. Sadly, suspicion quickly fell on two individuals: Michelle Brandes, 37, and Steven Gress, 35. They allegedly lured Corsette using a social media app, but what initially seemed like an innocent encounter ended dramatically and violently.

After meeting the pair, Corsette spent time with them before going home, but she returned to Gress’s house the very next day. This time, however, she faced an unimaginable nightmare. It seems that during her stay, there was a dispute regarding missing jewelry, which festered into a horrific situation for Corsette.

From February 20 to February 24, detectives believe that Corsette was subjected to unspeakable violence, including being beaten and tortured. They suspect she was killed during this agonizing timeframe. Once her life was taken, her body was moved to a residence on Mallory Drive in Largo, where the evidence suggested that foul play continued, possibly involving dismemberment.

The sadness doesn’t end there. Gress and Brandes are accused of disposing of Corsette’s remains in a dumpster located in Ruskin. Investigators are now on the grim task of searching a landfill in Hillsborough County in hopes of finding the remains of this young girl, who deserved so much better.

Legal Consequences Awaiting the Suspects

In the wake of these chilling events, Gress was already in custody on other charges, including drug possession and a bizarre incident where he pointed a harpoon at Brandes. Following his arrest, Brandes turned herself in to the authorities, both now facing charges of first-degree murder. As of now, they are being held in Pinellas County Jail, with Gress having been denied bond in a recent court appearance.

This troubling sequence of events not only highlights a disturbing rise in violence within the community but also stirs a collective sense of disbelief among locals. As the cases continue to unfold, the residents of St. Petersburg can only hope for resolution and healing in the wake of such profound loss. As investigations continue, there is an urgent need for justice, and caution is warranted among the community as everyone tries to come to grips with these horrific crimes.
