Volunteers of all ages come together for the St. Petersburg sidewalk cleanup, demonstrating community spirit and pride.
On April 19th, the Lakewood Estates Civic Association led the second annual 31st Street South Sidewalk Cleanup in St. Petersburg. Over 43 volunteers participated, collecting an impressive 234 pounds of trash. This initiative not only beautified the area but also fostered community engagement and pride. Partnering organizations enhanced the event, making it a collaborative effort to revitalize this crucial pedestrian pathway, with plans for future improvements focusing on safety and functionality.
In the heart of St. Petersburg, the spirit of community was alive and well on April 19th, as the Lakewood Estates Civic Association (LECA) held its second annual 31st Street South Sidewalk Cleanup. This initiative brought together residents, volunteers, and local organizations to tackle the neglected sidewalk that runs alongside 31st Street, from 54th Avenue to 22nd Avenue S. The result? A staggering 234 pounds of trash removed from the area, making it a cleaner and more welcoming space for everyone.
More than 43 volunteers rolled up their sleeves for this cleanup effort, demonstrating that when the community unites, so much can be achieved. This year’s event gained additional momentum with the help of fantastic partnerships, including Keep Pinellas Beautiful, The Global Love Project, the St. Petersburg Bike Club, the City of St. Petersburg, and PSTA. These collaborations not only enhanced the cleanup but also fostered a sense of belonging and pride among the participants.
Volunteers were equipped by Keep Pinellas Beautiful with grabbers, buckets, safety vests, and gloves, ensuring that everyone could participate safely and efficiently. The Global Love Project added a splash of creativity to the event by painting beautiful sidewalk art. This not only beautified the area but also brought attention to both the cleanup itself and the nearby I-275 underpass, encouraging the community to take notice of their surroundings.
The St. Petersburg Bike Club, typically known for their weekend rides, also participated in the cleanup. They made it a point to assist by cleaning the very sidewalk they often tread during their cycling adventures. This added a fun twist to their usual routine and highlighted the importance of caring for the paths they frequent.
The main goal of the 31st Street South Sidewalk Cleanup wasn’t just to collect trash but also to enhance community engagement, pride, and a sense of ownership—especially at a time when the city is planning for future improvements. Residents and stakeholders expressed a clear need for revitalizing 31st Street South to enhance safety and functionality for bikers and pedestrians, emphasizing the importance of creating a safer environment for everyone to enjoy.
The Lakewood Estates Civic Association has its roots firmly planted in the community around Lakewood Estates, which is bounded by Lake Maggiore to the north, 54th Avenue to the south, Martin Luther King Street (9th Street) to the east, and 31st Street to the west. The mission of this association revolves around community pride, property concerns, zoning, and beautification efforts.
In addition to organizing events like the cleanup, the association also runs a Neighborhood Watch program. This initiative addresses issues of crime, code violations, and safety concerns, further striving towards creating a secure and pleasant living environment for all residents. The work being done by the association is vital in making Lakewood Estates a desirable place to live, filled with dedicated individuals who care about their neighborhood.
As the cleanup draws to a close, the hard work demonstrated by the volunteers serves as a reminder of what a united community can achieve. The revitalization of the sidewalk along 31st Street South not only cleans up the area but also lays the groundwork for future improvements that will benefit pedestrians and cyclists alike. The success of this event shines brightly in St. Petersburg, leaving participants inspired to continue caring for their beloved community.
