After 13 years of closure, the Beach Theatre in St. Pete Beach is reopening on July 18, 2025. The historic venue, known for its rich legacy, has undergone extensive renovations, promising an exciting future for film lovers and live performance enthusiasts. The Hockman family, the new owners, have restored the theatre, preparing for a lineup of events, including a documentary premiere and live performances, while marking its 85th anniversary in 2025.
After a long-awaited closure of nearly 13 years, the historic Beach Theatre in St. Pete Beach is set to reopen its doors on July 18, 2025. This reopening marks a thrilling chapter for both film lovers and live performance fans in the local community.
Located at 314 Corey Avenue, the Beach Theatre holds a treasured spot in local history as the first ever air-conditioned movie house in Pinellas County. Originally debuting in January 1940, it entertained audiences for decades as a first-run, single-screen theatre, becoming a beloved fixture in the area.
However, the theatre’s journey hit a snag when it closed in November 2012 under the ownership of screenwriter Michael France due to personal challenges. Sadly, France passed away shortly after, leaving the future of this iconic venue uncertain. Fortunately, the theatre was purchased by the enthusiastic Hockman family in early 2024 after a previous investor’s renovation attempt fell through.
Retired insurance executives Ron and Sissy Hockman now own the property, with their daughter Hannah taking the lead on the restoration project. At just 26 years old, Hannah has been at the helm, overseeing extensive renovations that have completely transformed the beloved space. These renovations include a brand-new foundation, roof, and electrical system, along with essential framing updates.
Mother Nature put the project through its paces, as the renovations faced setbacks due to hurricanes Helene and Milton, causing water damage and other structural challenges. But the team pressed on, and as a result, a grand new stage measuring 25 by 22 feet is taking form, alongside upgraded lobby space and restroom facilities that will ensure a comfortable experience for all visitors.
The excitement surrounding the first screening is palpable! The initial presentation will feature a special documentary that delves into the theatre’s rich history, produced by Lunar Speedboat. In addition to movie screenings, plans are in motion for live performances, including everything from concerts to full theater productions.
Hannah Hockman is already busy crafting a lineup of various events designed to awaken public interest during the theatre’s first year back in action, which coincidentally aligns with the Beach Theatre’s 85th anniversary celebration in January 2025. It’s a time to reflect on the past while also looking forward to a vibrant future.
When it comes to concessions, the renewed Beach Theatre promises some exciting options. Expect gourmet coffee and alcoholic beverages to make your movie and live show experience a touch more special. Plus, plans are underway to incorporate a cabaret concert space, adding a new layer of entertainment.
The Hockman family envisions a diverse programming schedule that includes not only classic films but also a wide variety of live performances. As part of their commitment, they are set to launch a nonprofit called The Beach Theatre Initiative, which will help support the theatre’s mission in the community.
As excitement builds for the Beach Theatre’s reopening, the Hockman family is dedicated to keeping the public in the loop regarding construction updates and ticketing information. Various platforms will be used to share the upcoming schedule, making sure you won’t miss a beat. Get ready, St. Pete Beach—it’s time to experience the magic of the Beach Theatre once again!
