With three straight defeats, the Panthers aim to regroup and find momentum in their upcoming games.
In a tough matchup in Tampa, the Plant Panthers girls’ basketball team faced off against the Keswick Christian Crusaders, ultimately falling short with a final score of 44-33 on Saturday. This hard-fought game highlighted the competitive spirit on both sides, showcasing some incredible moments from the young athletes.
As the teams squared off, it was evident that the Panthers were up against a formidable opponent. Plant currently finds itself ranked 306th in the MaxPreps Florida basketball rankings, while their opponents, Keswick Christian, are positioned at 148th. The difference in rank made the tension palpable as both teams hit the court.
Despite the loss, the Panthers had some standout performances. Mallina Hubbard emerged as a key player for Plant, contributing six points and snagging five rebounds. Meanwhile, Manning Moran showcased her versatility with five points, five assists, and three steals, demonstrating great teamwork and resilience on the court.
On the other side, the Crusaders were led by Robyn Cantwell, who dominated the scoreboard with 16 points, while also grabbing five rebounds and five steals. Abby Fischer added to the Crusaders’ win with ten points and five steals, marking her strongest performance defensively since January. Another notable player, Hannah Jantomaso, scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds.
For Plant, this loss marks their third straight defeat on the road, bringing their season record to an even 6-6. It’s been a challenging stretch, but the team showed their grit by quickly regrouping and returning to the court on the 30th. In that game, they managed to bounce back with a strong 47-39 victory against St. Petersburg.
Keswick Christian also faced a turn of events on the 30th, as they suffered a tough 50-17 defeat against Bishop Kenny, showcasing the unpredictable nature of high school basketball. Earlier in the season, Keswick avenged a painful loss from the previous year’s regional championship by toppling St. John Neumann with a decisive 60-44 victory in the Class 2A-Region 3 semifinals.
In that semifinal game, Ava Graham played a pivotal role, scoring a notable 20 points, including nine in the intense fourth quarter. The Crusaders built a significant lead, thanks to a vigorous 19-4 run that left their opponents reeling. Neumann rallied but ultimately couldn’t contain the Crusaders’ performance in the fourth.
Defensively, Keswick excelled, especially in restricting Neumann’s leading scorer, Sydney Martin, to just four points in the first half, although she managed to finish with 21 points overall. This triumph also marked a career milestone for FHSAA Hall of Fame coach Karrmayne King, who celebrated his 654th career victory.
After advancing with an impressive 22-7 record, Keswick Christian will face Evangelical Christian in the next round of regionals. On another note, coach Bob Dare has made headlines with the announcement of his departure from Bishop McLaughlin. He plans to join his son David as the defensive coordinator at Keswick Christian next season.
As we look ahead, it will be interesting to see how both teams continue their journeys through the season. The Plant Panthers will need to harness their newfound momentum, while Keswick Christian must refine their strategies to maintain their competitive edge. With both teams brimming with passion and skill, fans are sure to be in for an exciting remainder of the season!
