In the wake of Hurricane Milton, Plant City is taking proactive steps to support residents facing a gas shortage and power outages. Governor Ron DeSantis has announced measures including free gas distribution and the mobilization of fuel tankers. With designated sites open for residents to receive up to 10 gallons of free fuel, local officials are working hard to restore services and assist those affected. The community is rallying through various initiatives, while FEMA has declared a federal disaster to aid in recovery efforts.
As the recovery efforts ramp up in Plant City, residents are feeling the impact of Hurricane Milton and grappling with an ongoing gas shortage. Just recently, Governor Ron DeSantis held an important press conference in the heart of the city, ensuring that help is on the way.
It’s difficult to imagine the normally bustling outlets running dry, but that’s exactly what’s happening at gas stations throughout Plant City. With fuel deliveries severely disrupted, thanks to the hurricane’s aftermath, many stations are left empty which has stirred up some frustration among locals. The Port of Tampa was knocked offline after losing power on Wednesday night, an event that significantly hampered fuel deliveries across the region.
During the press conference, Governor DeSantis was joined by several state officials including the local mayor and county commissioner, showcasing a united front. The three rows of fuel tankers positioned at Plant City Stadium served as a promising sight, signifying that help is on its way! The state has mobilized a good amount of fuel to assist residents until the regular supply chain can restore the flow.
To aid locals struggling to find gas, officials announced that residents could receive up to 10 gallons of free fuel at designated distribution sites. Currently, there are three main sites operating each day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Plant City, Bradenton, and St. Petersburg. And to ensure everyone can get what they need, there are plans underway to open even more sites in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties!
The Florida Highway Patrol is stepping in to escort fuel tankers directly to service stations to quicken the refueling process. For those gas stations still feeling the pinch of lost electricity, generators are being provided to ensure they can resume operations. Moreover, the state has 1.8 million gallons of diesel and 1 million gallons of gasoline ready for distribution, which should alleviate some of the immediate concerns.
But that’s not all. In addition to fuel, the state is also sending shipments of shelf-stable food, clean water, and ice across Florida to support affected areas. As of this past weekend, an impressive 12,000 miles of roads have already been cleared, helping to restore mobility and access.
Power outages have hit Hillsborough County hard, with approximately 517,000 outages reported, meaning that about 73% of TECO customers are currently without electricity. Thankfully, improvements in power restoration efforts mean that 75% of residents should see the lights back on by Tuesday midnight.
The City of Plant City is going above and beyond by providing hot meals to residents affected by the storm. Local businesses and organizations are also pitching in by donating food and supplies to support those in desperate need. In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Lowe’s has distributed 400 buckets filled with various cleaning supplies to help residents tackle water damage from flooding.
In the wake of the storm, FEMA has stepped in by approving a major federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Milton, which will enable residents to access low-cost loans and grants aimed at recovery. Meanwhile, the Florida National Guard is on-site in 19 counties, executing 115 active missions and managing 39 points of distribution for essential resources.
