In a significant move, the popular U.K.-based pizza chain, PizzaExpress, is making its way to the United States. Known for its unique handcrafted pizzas and vibrant dining atmosphere, the chain is set to open its first American locations in Florida as early as next year.
PizzaExpress, which operates nearly 360 locations in the U.K. and Ireland, has teamed up with franchise group Purple Square for this expansion. Purple Square, led by U.K. native Vik Patel, has a solid presence in the U.S. with over 245 franchise locations in 15 states.
The pizza chain intends to establish its debut locations in Florida, with primary interest in the Tampa and Orlando markets. Chris Holmes, the chief development officer at PizzaExpress, highlighted that the brand aims to cater to Floridians’ love for engaging dining experiences. The new restaurants will feature both full-service live music and “live light” music venues, covering spaces between 2,500 to 3,800 sq. ft.
The exact opening date is still in the planning stages, but PizzaExpress is actively working on site selection. The chain has ambition in its sights, aiming to reach 1,000 restaurants globally by 2030.
This move into the U.S. market aligns with PizzaExpress’s broader vision to introduce its distinctive brand to new audiences. The company focuses on creating a lively dining atmosphere where “showtime meets dinnertime,” making it suitable for various occasions – whether dining with family, friends, or a date.
Founded in 1965, PizzaExpress has known success in 12 international markets and is recognized for more than just its pizza. The chain integrates live music into its dining experience, operating six venues, including three in London, where well-known artists like Ed Sheeran and Amy Winehouse have performed. The introduction of the PX Records label underlines the brand’s commitment to promoting musical talent worldwide. This aspect of live performances is part of what PizzaExpress hopes to bring to diners in Florida.
The partnership with Purple Square was deemed essential for a successful U.S. launch. Vik Patel expressed enthusiasm about introducing a brand he has loved since his childhood in London, stating, “We know this concept has the potential to resonate with U.S. consumers in a truly unique way.” He emphasized that PizzaExpress locations are designed to welcome everyone, ensuring a memorable experience.
The impending arrival of PizzaExpress in Florida marks a notable step for the chain as it ventures into new territory. With the promise of high-quality pizza combined with an electric atmosphere featuring live music, the brand aims to win the hearts (and appetites) of American diners.
