In a startling police incident early Tuesday, seven deputies in Pinellas County are on administrative leave after a shooting that left a 65-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries. The investigation is currently underway by local authorities.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the normally peaceful streets of Pinellas County were shaken by a dramatic series of events involving local law enforcement. Seven deputies find themselves on administrative leave after their involvement in a shooting incident that left a 65-year-old woman injured during a police pursuit.
At approximately 1:30 a.m., deputies attempted to pull over Marina DeFilippo, who was driving a Toyota. The reason for the stop? She allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of 113th Street North and Park Boulevard. What started as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated.
Instead of complying with their request, DeFilippo reportedly paused for a moment and then decided to flee the scene. Despite deputies deploying stop sticks to puncture her tires, she continued driving, even with her tires deflated.
Things took a more intense turn when the Indian Shores Police also attempted to initiate a traffic stop. During their pursuit, they observed DeFilippo waving a gun. The situation became increasingly hazardous; during the chase, she even rammed into a patrol vehicle while heading north on Gulf Boulevard. The deputies were certainly in a precarious situation, considering the escalating nature of the encounter.
To bring the situation under control, deputies decided to escalate their tactics. Using a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, they performed a pit maneuver to stop DeFilippo’s Toyota. However, when they attempted to order her out of the vehicle, she unexpectedly tried to drive away once more and crashed into other vehicles on the road.
With the threat level substantially rising, the seven deputies took decisive action, firing their weapons and striking DeFilippo at least three times. While this was undoubtedly a tragic turn of events, the outcome for DeFilippo is precarious. She sustained what have been described as life-threatening injuries but is currently stable and receiving care at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital.
One deputy also reported minor injuries stemming from the collision during the pursuit, which added another layer of complexity to the already tense situation. In light of these events, DeFilippo is facing several serious charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated battery, and one count of fleeing and eluding.
The shooting has sparked significant concern and is currently under investigation by the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Task Force. While the identities of the deputies involved in the incident have not been publicly disclosed, their names will be part of the ongoing investigation process.
Residents of Pinellas County are left grappling with the shocking nature of the events that unfolded in their community. As the investigation continues, many are hopeful for transparency and justice, eagerly awaiting updates on the situation.
As we all know, these situations can unfold in mere moments. It’s vital to stay informed and be mindful of how incidents like these can impact our communities and those we hold dear. With ongoing investigations, more information will likely come to light in the days ahead. Stay tuned!
