Parks and Facilities
St. Petersburg, Florida, boasts a premier parks system, ranked first in the state and 14th nationally by The Trust for Public Land in 2022. The city’s Parks & Recreation Department manages over 150 parks, 17 recreation facilities, nine swimming pools, and more than 70 athletic fields, offering residents and visitors extensive opportunities for recreation and leisure.
Key Facilities and Offerings
Recreation Centers: The city operates 17 centers, including the Azalea Recreation Center and the Thomas “Jet” Jackson Recreation Center, providing programs for all ages.
Swimming Pools: Nine pools are available for public use, offering swim lessons, lap swimming, and recreational activities.
Athletic Fields: Over 70 fields support sports like baseball, soccer, and football, catering to both organized leagues and casual play.
Nature Preserves: Boyd Hill Nature Preserve offers trails, camping, and environmental education, highlighting the city’s commitment to natural preservation.
Management and Accreditation
The Parks & Recreation Department is nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), meeting all 155 standards for effective park operations. The department’s mission is to “preserve, protect, maintain and enhance the city’s parklands and recreational facilities and engage people in leisure activities that contribute to their quality of life.”
Additional Responsibilities
Beyond recreational offerings, the department plays a crucial role in disaster response, such as debris removal and ensuring public safety in parks following natural disasters.
