Emergency vehicles respond to a tragic roadside accident on I-275.
A tragic incident occurred on I-275 in Pinellas County when a 37-year-old Lakeland man lost his life while changing a flat tire. Struck by a passing vehicle, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Authorities are investigating, and residents are reminded of road safety amid recent flooding challenges in the area following Hurricane Helene.
This past Friday night was a heartbreaking one as tragedy struck in the sunshine state. A 37-year-old Lakeland man lost his life after a careless act on the roads while changing a flat tire on the busy I-275 in Pinellas County. The incident took place around 8:20 p.m., just near milepost 32, turning a regular roadside mishap into a devastating event for the victim’s friends and family.
Reports indicate that the man was traveling southbound on I-275 when disaster struck in the form of a flat tire. Without hesitation, he pulled over to the shoulder of the highway, parked his trusty Mazda, and got out to take care of the problem. As he was focused on changing the tire, a passing vehicle, believed to be a Tesla, made a critical mistake and failed to move over into the next lane. This lack of caution resulted in a tragic collision that left the man critically injured.
First responders arrived quickly on the scene and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. As of this moment, authorities have yet to release the man’s name, allowing his loved ones some privacy to process this dreadful event. The Florida Highway Patrol is actively working on identifying the driver who was responsible for this horrible accident, seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed what happened.
Officials have been very clear in their warnings, advising residents not to charge, drive, or even store electric vehicles in homes or garages that have been affected by flooding. In cases of flood exposure, it’s best to keep these vehicles at least 50 feet away from combustible materials. If necessary, it’s prudent to have the vehicles towed for inspection to ensure safety and integrity.
This heartbreaking incident comes on the heels of Hurricane Helene wreaking havoc across multiple states, including Florida and the Carolinas. The hurricane, which made landfall as a Category 4 storm with winds reaching a terrifying 140 mph, left destruction in its wake. Tragically, more than 116 individuals lost their lives across six different states due to this catastrophic storm.
In light of the devastation, federal support is on the way. President Biden has announced plans to visit the areas affected by the hurricane, ensuring that help is offered to those in need. The recovery efforts are critical, especially as communities work to rebuild after such a challenging event.
All in all, the events of this past weekend in Lakeland remind us all of the unpredictability of life and the importance of road safety. As the investigation continues into the hit-and-run that claimed a life, and as disaster recovery unfolds from Hurricane Helene, our thoughts go out to all those affected. Stay safe out there, everyone!
