News Summary

Joann Inc., the popular arts and crafts retailer, is shutting down all locations in South Florida as part of its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. This decision affects 36 stores in the region, with closures expected to impact the company’s operations significantly. While the closing sales offer discounts for customers, Joann assures that other stores will remain operational, and employees of the affected locations will continue to receive their pay and benefits during this transition.

South Florida Faces Changes as Joann Inc. Shuts Down Local Stores

Residents of South Florida, brace yourselves for some unsettling news! Joann Inc., the beloved arts and crafts retailer with a solid history dating back to 1943, has announced it is closing all its locations in the Sunshine State. This eyebrow-raising decision comes as part of the company’s second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

A Bit of a Background

Originally known as the Cleveland Fabric Shop, Joann has been a favorite stop for craft enthusiasts, DIY decorators, and sewing aficionados alike. Yet, things have taken a turbulent turn. The company first filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, going private shortly after, and now, just a year later, it’s gearing up for another round of tough decisions.

Closure Details and What To Expect

Following a recent court order from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the once-bustling Joann stores in South Florida will soon close their doors for good. Affected locations include 11 stores in the area, with an estimated 500 closures across the country, making up nearly two-thirds of Joann’s total locations. That’s a bold move in an attempt to restructure amidst pressing inventory issues and hurdles presented by today’s retail landscape.

The closing sales at these locations will be guided by procedures sanctioned by the court, allowing loyal customers to snag special deals while supplies last. So, craft lovers, be on the lookout for your chance to pick up those crafting goodies at discounted prices!

What’s Closing in South Florida?

A full list of locations in South Florida has been released, so if you frequent the Joann stores, you might want to take note:

  • Miami-Dade: North Kendall Drive, Flagler Street, Caribbean Boulevard
  • Broward: Hollywood Boulevard, South Federal Highway (Pompano Beach), Margate
  • Palm Beach: Northlake Boulevard, South State Road 7, West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Wellington

In total, Florida will see 36 of its Joann locations shut down, securing its position as the state with the second-highest number of closures, just behind California which faces a staggering 61 closures.

What About the Employees?

As difficult as this situation may be, Joann assures customers and employees alike that all other stores will remain open during this transition. That means online orders will continue to be processed, and the dedicated staff members are still receiving their pay and benefits, even as some stores close.

A Safe Haven for Remaining Stores

Interestingly, not all is lost! Joann plans to keep 12 stores open throughout Florida, including hotspots in Fort Myers, Tallahassee, and Destin. So, there will still be safe havens for craft lovers who wish to stock up on supplies before diving into their next creative project.

In Conclusion

The winds of change are certainly blowing through the arts and crafts scene in South Florida, and while it’s sad to see longtime local Joann stores close, there’s still hope thanks to the remaining locations and the ongoing online business. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this restructuring helps Joann come back stronger, ready to inspire crafty dreams once again!
