Exciting news for the tech landscape in Miami-Dade County! Iron Mountain, a leading player in the data solutions field, is kicking off construction on a brand-new data center, known as MIA-1. This new facility will clock in at a whopping 150,000 square feet and promises to be a game-changer for the region. Set to swing open its doors in 2026, the center will feature a powerful capacity of 16 megawatts. This isn’t just another building going up; it’s a sign of the evolving tech world in Miami.
The MIA-1 data center will be strategically located at 2925 N.W. 120th Terrace, conveniently near Opa-locka. This location is no accident; it positions the center as a crucial hub, with access to various regions including the U.S., Caribbean, Latin America, and even South America. With all these connections, Miami is shaping up to be a dynamic digital hub that can cater to a wide range of tech needs.
With the construction of this data center comes the promise of job opportunities. Iron Mountain is expected to create between 20 and 30 new jobs for the local workforce once MIA-1 opens its doors. As it stands, Miami has a 16.4% vacancy rate for data centers, a stark contrast to other major markets with notably lower rates.
While Miami has been somewhat overlooked in the race for prime data center locations, the construction of MIA-1 signals a potential shift for the city. Florida isn’t typically considered a top-tier choice for data centers compared to markets like Northern Virginia, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Silicon Valley. However, Miami’s significance as a central hub for international internet traffic cannot be understated. The NAP of the Americas serves as a pivotal link in this realm.
Even though there’s growth on the horizon, the path may not be straightforward. Future developments could be swayed by environmental concerns, including risks associated with hurricanes and challenges around power supply. Regardless, Iron Mountain aims to mitigate these issues by operating on 100% carbon-free energy by the time MIA-1 becomes fully operational.
