In the heart of Florida, the vibrant city of St. Petersburg is buzzing with excitement as local hero Henry Smith received the coveted Tampa Bay Blues Festival Music Award. This honor is not just any award; it recognizes over two decades of dedicated service and passion for music, making Smith a beloved figure in the community and beyond. The spotlight shined brightly on him as Chuck Ross, the founder and president of the festival, presented the award, highlighting Smith’s remarkable journey through the world of music.
At 78 years young, Smith’s music career is nothing short of extraordinary. For the past 23 years, he has been the stage manager for the Tampa Bay Blues Festival, ensuring that every performance is a memorable one. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Smith has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in rock history. Picture him working alongside legends like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and even the iconic ABBA! His experience sets him apart, having also worked with bands such as the Yardbirds, Scorpions, and Ted Nugent.
Going back to the early 1980s, Smith found himself involved in a project with none other than John Lennon. The former Beatle was considering a tour, and Smith had a bold idea—why not organize the tour without a promoter? He promised lower fees and even secured verbal commitments for ten shows, while another ten were in the works. Noted designer Mark Fisher was on board to create a unique stage show that included video components. Unfortunately, Lennon’s tragic passing on December 8, 1980, put a stop to those plans. Smith reflects that this missed opportunity would have been the pinnacle of his career.
Smith’s foray into the music industry began while he was still in high school in Connecticut. He was already booking concerts for legendary acts such as The Doors and Frank Zappa! Instead of pursuing a college education, he took the plunge and joined The Yardbirds. Just a day after getting hired, he found himself on a tour to Paris, traveling light and ready for adventure. Smith’s rookie year was not without its challenges, though. A van full of vital band equipment was stolen but thankfully returned intact just a couple of hours later, thanks to connections made by someone from his team.
Fast forward to more recent years, Smith has since retired from touring, opting for a more stable lifestyle while remaining actively involved in music through the Tampa Bay Blues Festival. His role as stage manager is multifaceted—ensuring artists’ needs are met, coordinating timely performances, and troubleshooting any issues that might arise during the festival. He remains a cornerstone of the festival, recognized as a highly valued team member and a consummate professional.

This year’s lineup boasts incredible artists like Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Tab Benoit, promising a weekend full of soulful blues music, delicious food, refreshing drinks, and unique vendors.
