In a thrilling and record-breaking home opener, the Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) softball team kicked off their season in grand style on January 28, 2025, against Florida State College at Jacksonville. Fans at the Titan Softball Complex were treated to an incredible day of action, as the Titans showcased their skills in a doubleheader that left everyone cheering.
As the smoke cleared after Game 1, the Titans emerged victorious, triumphing over FSC-Jacksonville with an impressive score of 11-3. However, things didn’t start off easy. The visiting team made a statement early on, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Nevertheless, Titans’ starting pitcher Avery Velazquez quickly got into the groove, demonstrating her prowess on the mound by shutting out FSC-Jacksonville for the next five innings.
In a dramatic turnaround, the Titans fought back vigorously. One of the highlights came when Martha Jones turned heads with an exceptional inside-the-park home run that sliced the lead down to 3-2. The Titans rallied tellingly in the third inning, sending an impressive total of 12 hitters to the plate and scoring an astounding six runs, emerging confidently with an 8-3 lead. Stellar performances from players like Ashley Corazzini, who notched three hits, played a crucial role in this memorable opener. Velazquez also showcased her striking ability, earning the win with four strikeouts.
Game 2 took the excitement up a notch as the Titans left no doubt about their dominance, ultimately defeating FSC-Jacksonville in a wild showdown with a score of 25-8. The Titans jumped out of the gate, scoring four runs right away in the first inning. But it was the second inning that truly stole the show. Thirteen runs crossed the plate in that inning alone, marking a remarkable tie with a program record and sending a clear message to their opponents. A record-breaking total of 18 hitters came to bat in that inning, a feat that had the crowd roaring.
Standout performances didn’t stop there; players like Isabel Otero, Aricelis Jimenez, Corazzini, Emma George, Ashley Greiser, and Jessica Camacho scored multiple times that inning, adding to the Titans’ commanding lead. The overall performance saw a striking combination of five hits, five walks, and even four players hit by pitches, all contributing to that extraordinary inning. Leading 17-6, EFSC capped off their competing glory with an additional eight runs in the fourth inning, showcasing their impressive depth.
Otero’s performance was nothing short of sensational in Game 2, totaling four hits while crossing home plate four times. Greiser also delivered an impressive showing, going 3-for-3. While Luci Walters picked up the win in this game, the spotlight was undeniably on the entire team as they celebrated a historical performance with a total of 25 runs, marking the most ever scored in a single game for the Titans.
With a current season record of 5-1, the EFSC Titans are riding high and full of momentum.
