The University of South Florida has welcomed David Blackwell as the new Lynn Pippenger Dean of the Muma College of Business. Blackwell’s extensive experience includes roles at the University of Kentucky and Texas A&M. He aims to improve the student-to-faculty ratio and foster collaboration with local businesses. As the fall semester approaches, the university community anticipates the positive changes he will bring to enhance business education.
Big things are happening at the University of South Florida, and they just got even bigger with the appointment of David Blackwell as the new Lynn Pippenger Dean of the Muma College of Business. Blackwell officially stepped into his role this past July, and the excitement around his welcoming is palpable.
On a lovely Tuesday, members of the community gathered at Lynn Pippenger Hall to meet Dean Blackwell during an introductory reception. This event was part of his welcome tour, which is taking him across USF’s three campuses to connect with students, faculty, and community members alike. The turnout was impressive, with local leaders and supporters present, marking a heartfelt welcome to the new dean.
Blackwell expressed feelings of being overwhelmed by the warm reception he received from everyone. It was a golden opportunity for him to connect with both donors and potential employers of USF graduates. It truly showcased the strong ties between the university and the surrounding community.
Before arriving at USF, Blackwell boasted an impressive resume. He served as the associate dean for professional graduate programs at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics and accumulated over 12 years of experience there, fulfilling various administrative roles. His journey in education also included positions at well-known institutions such as Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, the University of Georgia, the University of Houston, and Emory University.
Academically, he is no slouch either. Blackwell earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and a doctorate in finance from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. With this solid background, he hopes to enrich the business education landscape at USF.
As the new dean, Blackwell has some ambitious plans in store. One of his key focuses will be on addressing the high student-to-faculty ratio to enhance the educational journey for students and support their career preparation. He’s keen on boosting student progression and ensuring that graduate success is at the forefront of the college’s mission.
To achieve this, Blackwell intends to hold town halls throughout the semester. This is a fantastic way for him to connect with staff and engage with student leaders, enabling him to better understand the concerns of students and the needs of the community.
Blackwell also looks forward to collaborating with local businesses and community leaders, creating more enriching opportunities for students. By working together, there’s potential for innovative programs, internships, and job placements that can significantly benefit aspiring business professionals.
As the fall semester at USF ramps up and officially kicks off on August 26, 2024, the buzz of excitement around Dean Blackwell’s arrival is just the beginning. Alongside him, the university has also appointed new deans for the College of Public Health and the College of Arts and Sciences, and it looks like the sky’s the limit for USF.
With a fresh perspective and clear ambitions, Dean Blackwell is ready to make an impact. The entire community is eager to see how he will elevate the Muma College of Business and shape future leaders in the field.
